Ocean Currents

Published by pcsclasses on

Ocean currents are continuous, directed movement or pattern of movement of seawater. These currents  are driven by surface winds, water densities differences, additional forces like: Coriolis effects, tides, earthquakes, or storms . Ocean currents play vital role in shaping our climate, ecosystem and human activities.

Ocean currents are of two types:

  • Surface Ocean Currents: These are driven by the prevailing winds and by spinning motion of the Earth which drive the current into circulating whirlpools, or gyres.
  • Deep Ocean Currents: Over 100m below the surface, are driven by the differences in water temperature and salinity, which have an impact on the density of deep water and its movement.
