List of Important Glaciers of Himalayan mountain

The Glaciers are reservoirs of freshwater. They are formed from a mass of compacted recrystallized snow with the ability to flow. In simple words, the glacier is a huge mass of ice that moves slowly over land. As per National Snow & Ice Data Center, it occupies the world’s 10 % area.

Here we have listed some important mountain glaciers of India which are relevant to the examination.

Siachen Glacier

Gangotri Glacier

It is one of the largest glaciers in the Garhwal Himalayas with a length of 30.20 km. Bhagirathi river originates from Gomukhi, the snout of the Gangotri glacier.

Pindari Glacier

Altitude- 3353 m, length 3 km, and breadth 0.25 km. located between snow-capped Nanda Devi and the Nandakot mountains. river Pindari originates from this glacier.

Biafo Glacier

It creates the world’s longest glacial system outside of the polar regions. it is about 59 km in length. Fourth longest glacier outside the polar region.

Hipsar Glacier

62 km in length, it is the third-longest glacier outside the Polar region. It flows southward.

Milam Glacier

It is 15 km in length

Chongo lungma Glacier

50 km in length, flowing towards east.

Gasherbrum Glacier

21 km in length

Karakoram range
Mana Glacier along the border of Uttarakhand and Tibet
Daimir Glacier Gilgit Baltistan, Karakoram Mountain Range.
